PHARMAP 2025 brings together key industry players to discuss sustainable manufacturing and packaging solutions in Berlin, Germany, on 13-14 April. Through collaboration and innovation, the Congress aims to drive impactful change toward a greener pharmaceutical future.

The pharmaceutical industry remains a major contributor to climate change. Studies indicate that its greenhouse gas emissions surpass those of the automotive industry by 55%. This underscores the pressing need for green initiatives across the pharma market.

Sustainability has become a defining factor at every stage of pharmaceutical manufacturing. It is no longer solely an environmental concern – it is a strategic focus that optimises costs, drives innovation and enhances operational efficiency.

Achieving meaningful progress requires collaborative efforts across the pharmaceutical supply chain. In this context, networking and industry partnerships remain a key priority. For the past five years, the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Packaging Congress (PHARMAP) has been a platform for fostering new connections between different industry sectors.

The Congress features major pharmaceutical companies who are actively implementing sustainable practices. One such company, Novo Nordisk, has significantly reduced its environmental footprint by replacing plastic trays in its insulin pens with paper-based alternatives. This shift has reduced weight by 80% and volume by 50%, leading to lower transportation costs and enhanced customer loyalty. At PHARMAP 2025 Novo Nordisk discusses leveraging digital solutions to connect product, process and production.

Sandoz, the Regional Partner of PHARMAP 2025, is also making strides in the zero-waste future. Last year, the company joined the Energize Programme to support suppliers in decarbonisation efforts. Sandoz provides suppliers with the necessary resources to reduce Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions, ultimately contributing to lower supply chain emissions.

Ayse Hizli, Director of New Business & Global Partnerships Strategy at Sandoz, delivers a speech on the closing panel, dedicated to leveraging data for pharma quality assurance. She underlines the importance of strategic production collaborations in the pharma industry for quality evaluation.

Bayer, a long-term participant of PHARMAP, has set a clear climate strategy, aiming for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by 2050. The company plans to reduce emissions by 90% from 2019, with the remaining 10% offset through permanent carbon removal credits. Bayer is also working toward climate neutrality by 2030.

During the agenda, Olaf Stange, Head of Supplier Decarbonisation at Bayer AG, takes part in the session dedicated to sustainable tomorrow in the pharmaceutical industry. He presents ways for supplier decarbonisation and the importance of the green-minded approach within the pharmaceutical supply chain. Other experts joining Bayer in the discussion are:

  • Jürgen Bodenmüller – Director of Business Development at SÜDPACK Medica AG;
  • Ewa Gajewska – Head of Product Management, SYNTHIA at Merck;
  • Maja Diebig-Lorenz – Head of Sustainability and Innovation at INVITE GmbH;
  • Volker Strauss – Head of Department Pharmaceuticals, Chemicals, and Substance Testing at Umweltbundesamt.

Additionally, the Congress emphasises the Leadership Panel, which includes C-level experts from Graphic Packaging International, Roche Ecuador S.A., Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, INVITE GmbH, LEIPA Georg Leinfelder GmbH and UNICEF. This session focuses on сlean, smart and digital packaging technologies.

Andreas Köchling from Graphic Packaging International presents an overview of the Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and its implications for pharmaceutical and medical industry packaging.

“As part of our vision for the future, we have set out the goal that every new product innovation must be more circular, more functional and more convenient than existing alternatives. Together we can explore areas where companies can make a difference by choosing better packaging solutions,” states Köchling.

PHARMAP 2025 aims to unite experts, decision-makers and industry leaders to address the growing environmental challenges in the pharmaceutical industry. Only through collaboration the industry can drive meaningful change.
